This past week I had the privilege of sharing about the history of the Negro spiritual with some sixth, seventh and eighth graders at Walker Mill Middle School.
I shared with them that we all have pain. We all have pain. But we get to decide what we do with our pain. The slave took his pain and turned it into passionate music expressing his journey in a strange land and longing for a heavenly home.
So today we can learn from our ancestors and draw strength from them, helping us deal with our pain. And what a beautiful legacy they have left to us.
